Barry Hicken, Minister of Environmental Resources announced today that East Baltic Bog has been designated as a natural area under the Natural Areas Protection Act.
"The bog has been designated by a ministerial order" said Mr. Hicken. "The bog, approximately 400 acres in size, will be a protected area and will be available for appropriate ecotourism use. This area should serve as a good example of how environmental and economic concerns can work together."
East Baltic Bog is the best remaining domed bog left in a natural state in Prince Edward Island. It has insect-eating plants such as round-leaved sundew and the pitcher plant. It also has plants that are considered uncommon for the province including pale laurel and bake-apple. Wild orchids and other bog flowers add to the natural beauty of the area.
"The ownership of the property has been transferred from Enterprise PEI to the Department of Transportation and Public Works." said Mr. Hicken. "Now that the land is in provincial ownership, it has become possible to protect this area."
The Minister indicated his intention to call for proposals to manage the site from individuals or groups who may have an interest in the ecotourism potential of this site.
