The Links at Crowbush Cove Golf Course in Lakeside and Dundarave Golf Course at the Brudenell River Resort have been chosen by Score Golf for Women as two of the top 18 women-friendly courses in Canada. The article in the April/May 2000 edition of the magazine announces which courses have been given the unique designation. Only 18 courses in Canada were recognized as "quality golf courses where you are ensured a superior course, equitable service and unbeatable scenery."
The ratings were compiled by the magazine from the responses of the readers of Score Golf for Women. Last year, a request was made that readers provide names of favourite courses and then measure the course against a women-friendly criteria. Questions such as: How many sets of tee markers are on the course? Are women restricted from any tee times during the week or on weekends?
"This notoriety, coupled with the recent 5-star rating of the Crowbush Course in Golf Digest help to secure our strong foothold in this competitive and thriving market," noted Greg Deighan, Minister of Tourism. "We recognize that this particular demographic, women golfers, is increasing at a faster rate than any other at the moment with a count of about a million and a half in Canada alone. It is important that we provide the facilities and services that meet their needs."
"The Lorie Kane Island Challenge will further assist PEI in capitalizing on the growing women's market. With Lorie hosting Si Re Pak, Annika Sorenstam and Nancy Lopez, there is tremendous interest in seeing four of the best women golfers in the world tee it up in Brudenell later this summer," said Mr. Deighan.
Noted in the magazine article are some of the comments received. For the Links at Crowbush Cove, the unnamed quote states: "This course is very courteous to its female clientele, and very challenging. Superior view of PEI, sand dunes and beach." And, "Love Crowbush. Has a female superintendent, too." For Dundarave, "Brand new course designed with both men and women in mind. Five tee decks. Great course."
The Minister added, "This type of positive reinforcement of the quality of golf that can be played here on Prince Edward Island fosters the great reputation we have as one of the best golf destinations you are going to find - anywhere and for anyone."
