Winter weather has arrived on Prince Edward Island and that means Island drivers should use extra caution, says Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Ron MacKinley.
“This time of year the Island’s roads can present a whole new set of challenges,” said Minister MacKinley. “With that in mind, there are many steps Island drivers can take to improve safety on our highways.”
The minister’s comments come at the start of National Safe Driving Week. The event is coordinated annually by the Canada Safety Council during the first week of December. This year the theme of the week is “Who has your back on the road this winter?”
Some of the precautions recommended by the Canada Safety Council include:
• Adjust driving behaviour. Make sure there is adequate space between you and the vehicle ahead of you and be sure to adjust your speed for poor conditions.
• Maintain your vehicle. Be sure to do a full tune up in the fall and be sure to install winter tires ahead of the winter weather.
• Equip your vehicle. All vehicles should have an emergency car kit including a shovel, ice scraper, booster cables, flashlight and washer fluid as well as other items like a warm blanket, water, matches and a first aid kit.
“Following these tips can go a long way to improving safety on Island roads,” said Minister MacKinley. “Being prepared mentally, and having a vehicle properly equipped for winter, can give drivers an edge against Mother Nature.
