The Department of Transportation and Public Works today announced that a driver’s license reciprocity agreement between the province and the United Kingdom has been completed.
“This agreement will be of mutual benefit in many ways. For Islanders travelling, working and taking up residence in the United Kingdom, it will allow their license issued in their home jurisdiction to be exchanged for an equivalent license classification. The same will be true for those from the United Kingdom travelling, working and taking up residence on Prince Edward Island,” said Transportation and Public Works Minister Gail Shea.
The driver’s license reciprocity agreement reached will cover licenses issued for passenger vehicles and motorcycles, which are identified on Prince Edward Island as Class 5 and 6 licenses. As a result of this agreement, Islanders who exchange their license in the United Kingdom will no longer be required to perform written knowledge tests and on-road driving exams.
This new reciprocity agreement between Prince Edward Island and the United Kingdom will join other similar agreements reached with European jurisdictions such as Switzerland, Austria and Germany.
“Agreements like this reflect the importance of having consistent standards and protocols in place that are internationally recognized and accepted when it comes to the licensing of drivers. These agreements between jurisdictions take time to develop and establishing confidence in each other’s process is crucial to their success which at the end of the day benefit all citizens,” observed Shea.
