Drivers who regularly use Route 2 should be prepared for possible changes to the St. Peters Bridge detour in the coming weeks, and truckers are asked to use an alternate route, says Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Ron MacKinley.
“The Mill Road section of the detour is now open to all traffic except heavy trucks,” said Minister MacKinley. “But if the weather warms, as it may toward the end of this week, the department may have to close the Mill Road to all traffic except emergency vehicles until such time as the surface of the Mill Road firms up.”
If the Mill Road closes before the bridge re-opens to traffic, the detour for all light vehicles, excluding emergency vehicles, heading east will be as follows:
-From Route 2 in St. Peters take a right onto Route 313, Cardigan Road
-Turn left onto Route 312, Sparrows Road
-Take Route 312 until it meets up with Route 4 at Primrose
-Turn left onto Route 4
-Take Route 4 until it meets Route 2 in Dingwells Mills
-Turn left to access points between St. Peters and Dingwells Mills, turn right to access points further east.
Heavy truck traffic is now asked to use an alternate route to access eastern parts of the Island. The recommended alternate route for heavy trucks heading east from Charlottetown is as follows:
-Take Route 1 east to Cherry Valley
-Turn left onto Route 3
-Take Route 3 to Pooles Corner
-Turn left onto Route 4
-Take Route 4 until it connects to Route 2 at Dingwells Mills
-Turn left to access points between St. Peters and Dingwells Mills, turn right to access points further east.
All detours will be removed once the bridge replacement project is complete, which is expected the week of March 18, 2011 depending on weather.
