Health Minister Chester Gillan presented long-service preceptor awards to family physicians and hospital departments at an annual medical student and resident Christmas event at the Rodd Charlottetown Hotel last night.
In recognition of their long-term commitment to teaching and training medical students and residents throughout their clinical rotation, six physicians received awards in the category of family medical practice and four departments at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) and Prince County Hospital (PCH), respectively, were granted awards in specialty training areas.
“The leadership and dedication of these health educators provide medical students and residents with invaluable training opportunities,” said Minister Gillan. “It’s extremely important that we recognize those who have dedicated considerable time and effort to the continuing education of future prospective physicians for PEI,” he added.
The awards were given in the form of a plaque to those who have been teaching for ten, fifteen, and twenty years. Family physicians received individual awards and the hospitals received departmental awards because teaching in the speciality areas is done primarily on a departmental basis.
Family medical awards were granted to Dr. George Carruthers, Dr. Lana Beth Barkhouse and Dr. David Reid, Charlottetown; Dr. Philip Hansen, Alberton; Dr. Peter MacKean, Kensington; Dr. Cyril Moyse, Summerside.
Departmental awards were issued to the specialty areas of Pediatrics, Obstetrics, Emergency Medicine and Radiology at the QEH, and in the specialty areas of Pediatrics, Obstetrics, General Surgery and Emergency Medicine at the PCH.
Several other Island family physicians also teach and guide medical students through clinical rotations on PEI including: Dr. Ken Coady, Dr. Alfred Morais, Dr. Randy MacKinnon, Dr. Doug Tweel, Dr. Andrew Wohlgemut, Dr. Ed White, Dr. Stirling Keizer, Dr. Peter Hooley, Dr. Adriana Veer and Dr. Kathy McNally, all from Charlottetown; Dr. Frank Estey and Dr. Trina Stewart from Summerside; Dr. Helga Reisch and Dr. Chris MacNearney from Kensington; Dr. Paul Berrow from Souris.
Additionally, many other hospital departments teach medical students in the following specialty areas: Psychiatry, Radiology, Internal Medicine, Anesthesia, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, Surgery, Physical Medicine and Medical Oncology at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, and the Department of Internal Medicine at the Prince County Hospital.
The preceptor awards will become an on-going part of the yearly medical student and resident Christmas event, which is a joint initiative of the Department of Health and the PEI Medical Society.
