April 7, 2014 Health and WellnessThe Department of Health and Wellness supports the Medical Society of Prince Edward Island in encouraging physicians and patients to talk about reducing the number of unnecessary and potentially harmful tests performed each year, says Minister Doug Currie. “By participating in Choosing Wisely Canada, the Medical Society of Prince Edward Island will help ensure patients are receiving evidence-based care with the best outcomes,” said the minister. “I look forward to seeing how this initiative will help Islanders improve their health and support a sustainable healthcare system for future generations.” Choosing Wisely Canada encourages physicians and patients to talk about unnecessary tests, treatments and procedures and the benefits of evidence-based care. The Medical Society of Prince Edward Island is one of several healthcare organizations participating in the initiative. Choosing Wisely Canada complements the work of the Healthcare Innovation Working Group and Canada’s premiers who have agreed to adopt guidelines for the use of medical imaging for minor head injuries, lower back pain and headaches.
