Islanders have new opportunities this year to better understand their property assessments and tax bills, says Finance and Municipal Affairs Minister Wes Sheridan.
The 2010 property tax bills will be mailed Friday, May 7. A new format makes the bill easier to read and understand. An accompanying brochure provides more information on how properties are assessed and taxes are calculated.
Public information sessions will be hosted by Taxation and Property Records staff from May 11 to 20 in communities throughout the Island. At the sessions, staff will provide information and answer questions that people may have about their property tax bills. People can drop in anytime between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the following locations:
• Tignish, May 11, Tignish Initiatives offices
• O’Leary, May 13, Access PEI
• Summerside, May 17, Loyalist Inn
• Charlottetown, May 17, Rodd Royalty Inn
• Souris, May 19, Access PEI
• Montague, May 20, Access PEI
“Property taxes can be complex. We have improved the format of the tax bill this year and we are taking extra steps to help Islanders understand how property is assessed, how property taxes are calculated, and how to make payments on time, ” said Minister Sheridan.
