Department asks Islanders to Use Caution at Scales Pond

* Environment, Energy & Forestry [to Nov 2011]
With the recent dam failure and the subsequent receding of water in Scales Pond, the Department of Environment, Energy and Forestry is advising Islanders to be careful when walking near the pond.

The sediment is still saturated with water and the very moist soil is a hazard. It is unsafe to walk on the pond bottom because it is quite soft.

To ensure the safety of Islanders, people need to use extreme caution in and around Scales Pond.

The dam at Scales Pond failed on April 4 and the pond has been regularly monitored by the department. Options for the future of the pond continue to be assessed.
