The Prince Edward Island Government, Tourism PEI and the Charlottetown Airport Authority welcome aboard Delta Airlines to the expanding fleet of airlines serving the Charlottetown Airport. The service will be provided on a daily basis between Boston and Charlottetown using a CRJ 200 aircraft. Flights in 2007 are scheduled to operate from June 29 to September 16.
Schedule: Depart Boston at 11:30 a.m., arrive Charlottetown at 2:10 p.m.; depart Charlottetown at 2:50 p.m., arrive Boston at 3:30 p.m.
The announcement brings greatly increased service for Islanders and those travelling from New England and beyond. With this service, the Charlottetown Airport Authority is only the second airport in all of Atlantic Canada to have more than one scheduled US carrier providing transborder air service.
Premier Binns noted, “Prince Edward Island has been actively promoting itself to the New England market for many years through our tourism marketing campaigns and the New England area is considered one of our core geographic markets. As a result, we are very excited about the new air access provided by Delta Air Lines and the opportunities it will bring to our tourism industry,” he added. “We are very excited by the opportunities this new carrier provides as we offer yet another direct, non-stop flight to one of our key markets.”
Delta Airlines is Boston’s leading carrier and this spring will offer even more choice for travellers out of Boston through a significant expansion in service. This new service will offer travellers superior connecting opportunities with nearly 130 flights to more than 40 non-stop destinations; eight of them in new markets.
This is great news for our airport and for the Province of PEI. We have taken yet another step forward in bettering the service for our travelling customers with Delta Airline’s extensive network and connection options,” said Chairman Cliff Campbell.
“We are confident that travellers will take advantage of the direct flights to and from Boston. We have had Islanders and former Islanders travelling back and forth for generations,” said Mike Campbell, CEO, Charlottetown Airport Authority. “We are pleased to strengthen this Island connection with the city and through this new partnership we hope to bring our family and friends in Boston, one step closer.”
This announcement of new Delta service to Boston follows a previous announcement of a $2.1 million airport expansion project to accommodate the increase in international service at the Charlottetown Airport. Renovations include a 1026.5 square metre addition of new floor space to the air terminal building which will serve as an off-loading area and a passenger greeting section, the installation of a second incoming baggage handling belt to better handle the arrival of simultaneous flights, as well as an expanded entrance area and washroom facilities. Work on this project is expected to finish in mid-June 2007.
