Premier Pat Binns announced today that the 1st session of the 60th General Assembly will reconvene on Wednesday, November 12.
Premier Binns says the fall session reflects the government commitment to have the Assembly take a greater role in the establishment of public policy. "I think it is worthy of note that, as we celebrate the 150th anniversary of Province House, we are also increasing the role and relevance of the Legislature in setting policy directions."
This is the first time in 22 years that the Legislature has held a fall session as part of the regular Legislative process. The Assembly met for three part-days in November of 1992 to deal with one piece of legislation.
Major items for the fall session will be the results of discussions with Islanders on the unity issue as well as substantial debate on the implementation of recommendations of the Round Table report on Land Use and Stewardship.
"I want to see the Assembly take a key role in discussion on the Round Table and the action that will flow from that report. I expect the Standing Committee on Agriculture, Forestry and Environment will make a number of recommendations to the Assembly and it is the intention of government to have those matters addressed through open debates and votes."
Details on the activities of the Legislative Committee on the Constitution are expected this week, with the hope significant consultations can be held prior to the fall session.
