Honourable Mike Currie, Minister of Development and Technology and Mr. Robert Leard, chair of Northport Development Inc, today unveiled plans for a multi-faceted development at Northport Pier.
Designed to highlight the community's rich marine heritage and natural beauty, Northport Pier will include a sea rescue interpretation centre, an enhanced marina and pier area including a boardwalk, an eco-tourism centre with leasable space and a 10-room country inn.
"Northport Development Inc. was the driving force behind this project. Recognizing the importance of building new infrastructure and improving on existing facilities will boost local business and assist in attracting tourists to the area," said Minister Currie. "Our partnership in this project reflects the Province's commitment to bring business and tourism opportunities to West Prince."
Community officials had been looking at ways to strengthen the local economy through tourism opportunities and felt capitalizing on the long history of fishing in Northport would be a logical connection.
"The realization of this community-driven project is the result of cooperation with many local partners. Northport Pier will complement and strengthen the fishery-based economy at Northport," said Robert Leard, chair of Northport Development Inc.
The Province is contributing $300,000 through the Community Development Fund, $200,000 through the Canada-Prince Edward Island Infrastructure Program, and an additional $120,000 will be contributed through the Canada/Prince Edward Island Regional Economic Development Agreement. Funding from the Community of Northport and Northport Development Inc is $ 100,000.
