Coool Pedal Gang Web Site Receives Traffic Safety Award

* Transportation and Public Works [to Jan 2010]
The Coool Pedal Gang, a bike helmet safety Web site of the Department of Transportation and Public Works and the PEI Bike Helmet Coalition, has received the June Traffic Safety Award from the Canadian Association of Road Safety Professionals (CARSP).

The Canadian Association of Road Safety Professionals is a national organization of professionals involved in the research, management and delivery of road safety programmes in Canada. Drawing members from government, academia, and the private sector, CARSP's Web site (www.carsp.ca) is a useful source of local, national and international information on road safety practices. Each month the association recognizes a Canadian Web site for posting useful traffic safety information and having good site design. The Coool Pedal Gang was selected as June's recipient of the Traffic Safety Award, which includes being featured on the association's "Slick Click's" page.

Transportation and Public Works Minister Don MacKinnon welcomed news of the Traffic Safety Award. "The goal of the Coool Pedal Gang is to inform Islanders about the benefits of proper helmet safety. The Web site was developed as a resource to supplement the printed materials and presentations delivered to all Island schools and kindergartens, and the upcoming Helmet Safety Quiz contest with Smooth Cycle is on the Web site, so we're very excited about this national recognition," says MacKinnon.

The Coool Pedal Gang project is a cooperative partnership of the Department of Transportation and Public Works and the PEI Bike Helmet Coalition, a community group including membership from the PEI Medical Society, Public Health Nursing, the PEI Council of the Disabled, the PEI Home and School Association, the Charlottetown Police Department, the RCMP, Neil's Ambulance, and numerous sports retailers, including Smooth Cycle. Program materials and the Web site were developed by Media Concepts and Graphic Communications.
