* Tourism [to Jan 2010]
The Bed & Breakfasts and Country Inns of PEI, with support from Tourism PEI, have collaborated with Chef Calvin Burt to create a cooking class aimed at even higher standards in the kitchens across the Island. This pilot project will entail two courses, "Inn Keepers Cooking" and "A Touch of the Classics," targeted to Island Bed and Breakfast and Country Inns of PEI operators.

Minister of Tourism, Jeffrey Lantz, noted, "This is a great initiative that the Bed and Breakfast and Country Inns of PEI Association have developed, and it shows the commitment that our operators have towards further developing our tourism product for our customers." He added, "Improving the quality of our product is a progressive way of staying on top of the game, and I am sure that the visitors to Prince Edward Island will be the ultimate winner."

The course will be offered this March and will provide basic and advanced cooking skills to those who would like to enhance their guests' culinary experience. The course will focus on presentation and production at a professional level featuring Island food products.

President of the Bed and Breakfast and Country Inns of PEI Association, Mary Kendrick, noted, "As an association, we are eager to work in partnership with Tourism PEI in undertaking this "Pilot Project" – an exciting new initiative which will highlight our operations and expose our guests to professional food handling and culinary delights."

Chef Calvin Burt has been the Owner, Manager and Chef of the Shipwright Café in Margate, Prince Edward Island since 1998, with previous experience at Canadian Pacific Hotels and Resorts as well as the Banff Spring Hotel. Along with the basics of cooking and cooking techniques, the course will allow students attending exposure to a number of professional trends and options in culinary arts that they will be able to apply to their own needs and situations as inn owners.

"Our many visitors who come to the Island to enjoy our fabulous Bed and Breakfasts and Country Inns will have their stay enhanced through a great culinary experience," said Mr. Lantz.
