The 1996 Young Environmentalist Program (YEP) sponsored by the provincial government came to a close last week, marking the end of its seventh sucessful season.
In 1990, the Department of Environmental Resources recognized a need to educate Island youth about the importance of protecting and enhancing the environment. Projects such as stream enhancement, trail creation, soil erosion control, natural areas enhancement and various community sponsored projects have help to realize this goal.
"The 1996 program has been one of our most successful campaigns, commented program coordinator, Sean Cain. The program has responded to the needs of different communities and environmental organizations around the Island by lending teams to help with their environmental projects. A total of 80 projects were supported by teams from our program this year, he added."
Mr. Hicken commented that the Young Environmentalist Program is an important program for Environmental Resources because it not only provides necessary summer employment for students, but through their efforts, the Island is made a little better for all.
