Contest launched to celebrate 2011 Intergeneration Week

* Community Services and Seniors [to May 2015]
Islanders are encouraged to participate in Prince Edward Island’s premier celebration of Intergeneration Week, says Minister of Community Services, Seniors and Labour Janice Sherry.

“Intergeneration Week is an opportunity to concentrate on the importance of blended generations,” said Minister Sherry. “Unifying Islanders is imperative to our goal of becoming a One Island Community.”

Islanders of all ages are invited to celebrate the 2011 PEI Intergeneration Week by entering the Seniors’ Secretariat storytelling contest. Entries must be original and unpublished and may be submitted in the form of a fiction or non-fiction story, poem or song. Submissions will be judged on style, syntax, entertainment, content and organization. Entries should feature characters from at least two generations and portray positive images of aging. Judging will be the responsibility of a panel comprised of members of the PEI Seniors’ Secretariat.

Contest winners for Prince Edward Island’s first-ever Intergeneration Week Storytelling Contest will be announced and prizes awarded during the 2011 Intergeneration Week that runs from Sunday, October 2 to Sunday, October 9. Winning entries will also be recognized during the Senior Islanders of the Year Awards ceremony on Monday, October 24.

The grand prize winner will receive $200, runner-up will receive $150 and third place will receive a gift certificate. Deadline for submissions is Monday, August 22.

Intergeneration Week began in October 1997 as Intergeneration Day. In 2000, the one-day celebration became a week-long event. It is celebrated across the United States and has quickly become an international celebration, spreading from Canada to Africa to New Zealand. The focus of Intergeneration Week is to bring generations together in an effort to strengthen communities around the globe.

Submissions can be e-mailed to seniors@gov.pe.ca, faxed to 894-0242, or hand delivered to Seniors’ Secretariat, c/o Department of Community Services, Seniors and Labour, 11 Kent St. 2nd Floor Jones Building, P.O. Box 2000, Charlottetown, PE C1A 7N8. Entries should include a name, address, telephone number and e-mail.
