Construction of a new $2.3 million kindergarten addition at Westwood Primary School is now well underway, says Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Gerard Greenan.
“Construction of the new kindergarten wing is coming along nicely,” said Minister Greenan. “When it is finished, Cornwall area students and teachers will have access to a contemporary new facility that is very conducive to early learning.”
The 15,000 square foot addition includes 11 kindergarten classrooms, two Grade 1 classrooms, a Reading Recovery centre, teacher planning rooms, offices, washrooms and a fenced courtyard playground.
There are approximately 410 grades 1, 2 and 3 students now attending Westwood. Enrollment is expected to increase to 535 students when kindergarten begins in September 2010. The school was built in 1991 to accommodate 450 students.
The new addition was designed by N46 Architecture Inc. The general contractor is Williams Murphy and Macleod (1993) Ltd.
