January 22, 1999 * Health and Social Services [to Nov 2005]There has been some recent inquiries about a child who was hospitalized for a skin illness in a community in West Prince. This child's illness is not the bacterial disease of necrotizing fasciitis (flesh eating disease). Rather, this youngster's illness is a very common infectious ailment in the pediatric age range. It is termed impetigo and secondary cellulitis. It is occasionally contagious through physical contact of an open wound of an infected person (example: insect bite or burn). It is not life threatening, and it usually responds quickly to commonly used antibiotics.
