Transportation and Public Works Minister Gail Shea, Minister Responsible for the Island Waste Management Corporation (IWMC), today announced in the Legislative Assembly details of the annual Compost Appreciation Day, to be held on Saturday, May 21.
“Islanders have worked hard to make the Waste Watch program a success during the last three years and the compost being made available to Islanders is the result of that hard work,” said Shea.
Compost will be available to Islanders at all Waste Watch Drop-Off Centres across the province from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. These include sites in Wellington, Brockton, Dingwells Mills, New London, Murray River, Charlottetown and at the former Charlottetown airport property on Brackley Point Road.
Customers will be limited to up to a single half ton truckload each. Each site will have loading equipment available to assist customers. Customers will also be able to bring their own buckets, containers and bags if they wish.
“Compost Appreciation Day is an initiative that will give Islanders a chance to partake in the quality product being produced through the Waste Watch Program,” said Gerry Moore, CEO of the Island Waste Management Corporation. “Islanders will have the opportunity to be able to use some of this quality product around their homes and gardens and know that they are helping contribute to a cleaner environment.”
Shea advised that there will be no charge to the public for the compost but that IWMC staff will be accepting voluntary donations to the PEI Children’s Wish Foundation throughout the day.
Island Waste Management Corporation (IWMC) is the provincial Crown Agency that manages and administers solid waste management services province wide. Among these services are delivering the Waste Watch program, Canada’s only province-wide, source-separation waste management system. Since the Waste Watch program went province wide in 2002, nearly 600 million pounds of organic waste has been diverted from Island landfills, offering significant protection to the Island’s groundwater supply and positioning Prince Edward Island as a national leader in responsible environmental stewardship practices.
