An upcoming opportunity for Islanders to acquire free compost will help benefit two charitable initiatives.
The Island Waste Management Corporation (IWMC) today announced that its annual Compost Appreciation Day will be held on Saturday, June 14. Compost Appreciation Day is an event where Islanders can receive free compost produced through the Waste Watch program at the province’s Central Compost Facility. The free compost will be available at a number of locations across Prince Edward Island while quantities last.
Another feature of Compost Appreciation Day is charitable support. The Island
Waste Management Corporation is a proud sponsor of the Plant A Row, Grow A Row Program which supports local food banks and soup kitchens. Customers collecting compost are offered packages of seeds while quantities last, generously supplied by Vesey’s Seeds, and invited to plant an extra row of fruit or vegetables for donation. Staff from IWMC will also be accepting donations to the Children’s Wish Foundation from customers throughout Compost Appreciation Day.
“Compost Appreciation Day is a way to say thank you to Islanders for all that they do year round to help make the Waste Watch program so successful,” said Gerry Moore, CEO of Island Waste Management Corporation. “It also gives us a chance to partner on two worthy causes which are the Plant A Row, Grow A Row Program and the Children’s Wish Foundation.”
“The proceeds from this event will go towards helping to fulfill wishes for Island children, so we greatly appreciate the support received though Compost Appreciation Day and from the staff of IWMC,” said Lee Gauthier, Executive Director of the PEI Chapter of the Children’s Wish Foundation.
“The Children’s Wish Foundation and the Island’s local food banks provide very important services to Islanders in need,” says Minister of Transportation and Public Works Ron MacKinley, Minister responsible for IWMC. “I expect Islanders will use Compost Appreciation Day as an excellent opportunity to donate generously to these two very worthy causes.”
Compost Appreciation Day will be held between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 14, while quantities last. Staff will be available to assist customers in loading but customers are encouraged to bring their own containers. A maximum limit of one half ton truckload or one cubic yard per customer will be enforced. Compost will be available at all IWMC Drop Off Centers in Brockton, New London, Dingwells Mills, Murray River, and Charlottetown; the East Prince Waste Management Facility in Wellington Centre; the Central Compost Facility in Brookfield; and a new location this year at the parking lot adjacent to the Transportation and Public Works Garage on Park Street in Charlottetown.
