Barry Hicken, Minister of Environmental Resources, announced today that over 54 projects sponsored by 42 community groups have received support under the department's Wildlife Habitat Improvement Program. "This support is in the form of direct financial contributions, as well as technical and professional advice" noted Mr. Hicken. To date, over $150,000 has been granted to community groups.
The Wildlife Habitat Improvement Program is a new initiative of the department to assist community groups in wildlife habitat related projects. Activities being supported range from improving habitat conditions in watercourses for fish and other water-dependant wildlife, to managing natural areas to rearing salmon and trout for stocking Island streams and rivers in support of public fisheries.
"Projects being sponsored span the Island," noted Mr. Hicken.
"The work being carried out by community groups is resulting in improved habitat for a variety of wildlife throughout the province," added Mr. Hicken. The following is a list of community groups being supported under the WHIP program:
