Community Development Conference with a Difference

* Development and Technology [to Apr 2008]
People interested in community development will have the opportunity to participate in a unique conference on either of the next two weekends.

The PEI Community Development Travelling Conference will take place on a bus, which will travel from east to west the first weekend and from west to east the next. Participants will stop at a number of community development projects along the way. As well, the trip will take them past a number of sites which will be explained by facilitators on the bus. There will also be talks by facilitators from sites which will not be visited but have an interesting story.

“Community development has been an enormous success in this province,” said Development and Technology Minister Mike Currie. “Volunteers across PEI have come up with some really great and innovative projects that have really helped to sustain their communities. This tour is an excellent opportunity for people to see what these communities have accomplished.”

The tour that begins in the east will concentrate on projects at the western end of the Island and the tour that begins in the west will do the opposite. This will give people from either end of the province a chance to visit projects they might not be familiar with.

Each tour will view nine different community development sites and have talks on others. Sites to be visited include: the Summerside Waterfront, the Wellington Seniors Housing project, and the development at Northport (western tour) and waterfront developments at North Rustico, Cardigan and Montage (eastern tour), among others.

Lunch will be provided on both tours.

The tours are open to anyone interested in community development and there are still a limited number of seats for both events. There is no charge for the tour. For more information, or to book a seat contact Kellie Mulligan at 432-2705.
