Committee Plans to Revive the Sport of Track and Field

* Education [to Apr 2008]
The Department of Education, in partnership with Sport PEI, will lead an initiative to revive the sport of Athletics/Track and Field in Prince Edward Island, by chairing the newly established PEI Athletics Committee.

Coaches, athletes, past and present, parents and Islanders from across the province attended a public meeting earlier this month to discuss their interest in athletics/track and field in PEI. The meeting focussed on the future of the sport in PEI, and how to provide opportunities for track and field athletes and coaches to display their talents.

At that meeting, 12 Islanders volunteered to sit on the interim planning committee. Committee members include: Colin MacAdam; Ralph Freeze; Barrie Stanfield; Chris Bulman; Lynn Anne Gallant; Chris Becker; Mary MacLeod; Gordon Sobey; Maria McQuaid; Keith Dewar; Mike Petitpas; Mark MacDougall; Ted Lawlor, and Gemma Koughan.

Organizers of the meeting were delighted with the attendance and the high interest of participants who will play an active role in the planning committee.

Islanders interested in reviving the sport of track and field in PEI are invited to attend the next public meeting scheduled for Thursday, December 2, at 7 pm at the UPEI Sports Centre.
