Committee To Conduct Investigation

* Health and Social Services [to Nov 2005]
A thorough investigation of the disciplinary provisions of the provincial Medical Act will be conducted by a committee of Members of the Legislative Assembly. Committee members are the following MLAs: Chair, Marion Murphy; Elizabeth (Libbe) Hubley; and Claude Matheson.

Health and Social Services Minister Walter McEwen, Q.C., has asked members of the Committee to thoroughly review the provisions of the Medical Act. He anticipates this review to result in improved safeguards for Islanders.

In June, the Prince Edward Island College of Physicians and Surgeons reinstated the license of Dr. Douglas Ian Cameron following a one-year suspension. Dr. Cameron was convicted on charges of sexual and indecent assault.

Following a series of public hearings and review of the Medical Act, the Committee is expected to issue a report on its findings in October.

The Committee is expected to begin its work immediately.
