Commitment To Small Schools Maintained

Premier's Office
Premier Pat Binns today announced the Eastern School District has been asked to suspend the scheduled public meetings on the Eastern School District's Facilities Review Study.

Premier Binns says, "the request is a reflection of the fact our government has always been committed to the continued operation of small schools and intends to honour its commitment to keep schools open. It is obvious the public meeting process was causing unnecessary anxiety and confusion."

The Board has completed the first round of information sessions and recognizes the Premier has made it clear small schools will not close.

"I am requesting the Minister of Education, Chester Gillan, and the Board to initiate early discussions on ways to find adequate funding to maintain the quality of education that presently exists," stated the Premier.

Education Minister, Chester Gillan says, "we are interested in hearing from Islanders on ways to improve the education system, however, the present meetings are too focused on school closures. I would encourage the School Board to provide an alternate opportunity for input on other issues."
