Civic Number Signs Remain Unclaimed

Officials from the 911 Administration Office remind rural property owners that a number of civic address signs remain unclaimed. More than 2,000 rural property owners have not claimed their civic address signage kits – a key component of the 911 Emergency Response System across the province.

"During the summer of 1999, approximately 32,000 sign kits were distributed at special fire department depots in preparation for the 911 service. The remaining kits were deposited at various Access PEI sites across the province as a convenience to rural owners for pick-up," says Larry Avery, Acting 911 Provincial Coordinator.

Although approximately 4,000 of these $10.00 kits have been claimed during the past three years, records indicate that 2,000 remain at the Access PEI sites.

"We have encouraged owners of these sign kits to pick them up and display the required civic number; however, this phase of the project is ending," says Avery.

Avery points out that, while the white on blue number signs are used by emergency service providers to locate an address where help is needed, it is also a legal requirement for property owners in provincial rural civic addressing jurisdictions to display this special signage.

"For the 911 system to operate effectively and for our fire, police and ambulance services to provide emergency services, it is essential that all properties have signage properly displayed," says Avery. "We appreciate the efforts of all residents and emergency service providers whose continued efforts ensure an efficient and effective 911 Emergency Response system throughout the province."

Civic address sign kits will be available for pick-up at Access PEI locations across the province until November 1, 2002. Following that date, property owners will be responsible for purchasing their own signs.

Anyone with questions or requiring assistance regarding civic number signage in a Provincial rural jurisdiction is asked to contact the 911 Administration Office at 894-0385.
