Check Potato Storages on a Regular Basis

* Agriculture and Forestry [to Oct 2003]
Now that this year's potato crop is harvested, keep in mind that it is still a long way from the market.

The harvest conditions this fall were abnormally warm and in turn make it very difficult to cool down tubers in storage. Growers are encouraged to check their potatoes on a regular basis; especially those varieties that were harvested early and are being stored at processing temperatures.

Try not to depend solely on electronic or mechanical instruments when monitoring the storage facility. Electronic storage equipment is helpful, but one should continue to physically evaluate potatoes in storage. Use your sense of smell to determine if there are any rotting tubers present. Look to see if there are any depressions or wet spots in the pile. Check for fruit flies which are always a good indication that there is a storage rot problem developing.

If you feel you have a problem, contact your local agricultural representative for assistance. Submit samples for analysis to the Provincial Plant Health Laboratory located in Kensington, or to your local district office. Control measures will depend on the type of disease identified. However, early detection of a disease problem in storage, coupled with appropriate management procedures, can often save an entire pile.
