More than 350 school counsellors, teachers, administrators and other professionals from across Canada will be in Charlottetown May 17-20 for the Canadian Counselling Association annual conference.
"We are pleased that Prince Edward Island is hosting such an impressive conference," said Education Minister Jeffrey E. Lantz. "This conference will provide an exceptional forum for school counsellors and other professionals who work with children."
The conference begins on Wednesday, May 17, with a keynote address that is open to the public. Adele Faber, an educator and author, will give the keynote address entitled "How to Talk So Kids Will Learn." Faber has written a series of books, all aimed at improving the way parents and educators talk with children.
"We are thrilled to have someone of Ms. Faber's calibre at this conference," said Sherren Morrison, conference co-chair and guidance consultant with the Department of Education. "Our conference planning committee has been working enthusiastically for the past two years to prepare an agenda that is dynamic and interesting for delegates."
Ms. Faber's presentation begins at 7 pm on May 17 at the Delta Prince Edward. Tickets will be available at the door.
Other keynote speakers will address the state of children's education in Canada, youth at risk and violence among female students. In addition to the keynote addresses, delegates may chose from 13 concurrent sessions which will be running each morning and afternoon on May 18-20. Topics at these sessions include: strategies for children at risk, programs for high school drop outs, family violence, keeping teen moms in school, ethics and eating disorders.
"We are very excited about hosting this conference," said Daphne Campbell, conference co-chair and school counsellor at Colonel Gray Senior High School. "We look forward to learning from our speakers as well as providing conference delegates with a memorable Island experience."
