The Confederation Centre Children's Library is celebrating the end of another successful Summer Reading Program with a medieval fair and market place August 27 and 28 for Charlottetown children who participated in the program.
Over 325 children took part in the Summer Reading Program offered at the Confederation Center Library. Education Minister Chester Gillan and many school principals also joined in the fun by registering for the program and making a commitment to read a certain number of books during the summer period.
The 1998 program theme, A Good Knight's Read, centered around medieval history. Each library in the province was designated as a shrine or pilgrimage site. Participants in the program were encouraged to visit as many sites as possible and collect a souvenir token at each library. Children recorded the number of books they read during the summer and for each book read, they earned a token to barter with at the closing party.
Staff at the Confederation Centre Library have organized many exciting activities for the closing party. Medieval food and cider will be served out of The Blue Boar Inn, a favourite hang-out of Robin Hood, and a street peddler will be hawking ribbons and lace. As always at these events, a tournament will be held to entertain the masses and the stocks will be in place as a means of controlling unruly citizens who get carried away with the celebrations.
The Summer Reading Program is an annual event at all libraries in the province. The fun program has a dual purpose of getting children to visit their library and it encourages them to read during the summer and maintain their level of reading skills. A Good Knight's Read, has proven to be very popular at all Island libraries, as children received a history lesson in a very entertaining manner.
Provincial Library staff wish to express thanks to the many businesses, community groups, service clubs and individuals that contributed to the overwhelming success of the 1998 Summer Reading Program.
