Charlottetown Area Transportation Study Announced

Mr. Bennett Carr, Chair of Charlottetown Area Development Corporation, today announced a comprehensive transportation study for Charlottetown, Stratford and Cornwall.

The Charlottetown Area Transportation Study is a joint effort between the PEI Department of Transportation and Public Works, PEI Department of Development and Technology, City of Charlottetown, Town of Stratford and Town of Cornwall.

Over the next several months, transportation related data, employment zone data and existing parking information will be collected as key components for a comprehensive transportation planning and analysis system. This information will provide a wealth of background information on the existing street network, traffic control and available parking facilities in and around the Charlottetown area, and will provide an understanding of present day travel habits, patterns and problems.

"The economy in Charlottetown, Stratford and Cornwall is very strong and, because of that, we are seeing an increase in the amount of people living and doing business in these areas," said Mr. Carr. "It is important that we undertake this study to come up with the proper solutions to keep traffic flowing safely and efficiently in and around these municipalities."

Hon. Don MacKinnon, Minister of Transportation and Public Works, said data collected from the study will be used as part of a hi-tech, traffic modelling system with the capability to identify existing and future problems with traffic flows and parking.

"A traffic modelling system will allow us to fully detail the changes to traffic patterns when an intersection is signalized or when existing routes are changed," said the Minister. "The system will also be beneficial in providing analysis of possible traffic patterns in the event of the establishment of a new commercial, residential or institutional development."

The study is being prepared by SGE Group Inc. and should take six months to complete.
