Recent amendments to the Change of Name Act now make it easier and less costly for Islanders to change their name.
Health and Social Services Minister Jamie Ballem advised that, following the proclamation of new regulations this week, in most situations people can now have their child's name changed by making application to the Vital Statistics Office rather than going through the court system. "It's important to have accurate identification, especially in this time of heightened security and identity," said the minister. "By simplifying the process and reducing the cost, we hope more Islanders will take steps to ensure their identity is accurate."
Changes to the Act make it possible for most people to change their name through the Vital Statistics Office at a much lower cost. In the past, the cost to have a name changed ranged from $500 to $1500. Under the new regulations, this cost will be reduced to about $160, and less for additional family members.
Thelma Johnston, Director of Vital Statistics, advised that people often apply for a name change following a marriage when a parent wishes a child to assume a new surname. People from other countries often wish to Canadianize their name after becoming Canadian citizens. There are also many cases where people realize the name they have used all their life is different from the one that was officially registered at birth. A change of name is required to change the name on a birth certificate to reflect the preferred name.
Ms. Johnston said it's important to have accurate identification for a variety of reasons. "Your birth certificate is the primary foundation document needed to obtain other identity documents or services, such as, a passport, driver's license or medical coverage." She said, "The time may come when you will need to verify your identity, and it may not be convenient to begin the application process at that time."
People wishing to change their name should contact the Vital Statistics Office to make an appointment. Staff will advise them of the necessary documentation required, and assist them to complete the application process.
