Staff at libraries throughout Prince Edward Island are joining their colleagues across Canada during the month of October to celebrate the important role libraries play in our communities and the ways in which libraries enhance the quality of life for all Islanders.
This is the 75th anniversary year of the Provincial Library Service in Prince Edward Island and a wide variety of activities, supporting the theme Your Library: Your World, are planned this month and throughout the fall.
“Canadian Library Month is a time to celebrate libraries and a chance to discover everything our 26 provincial libraries have to offer,” said Hon. Carolyn Bertram, Minister of Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour. “I encourage Islanders to take advantage of the many opportunities offered this month and discover the many ways your library can provide a gateway to your world.
“Libraries are centres for life-long learning and are key partners in supporting literacy,” Minister Bertram added. “Our libraries offer English as an Additional Language resources to new Canadians; they are centres where parents and children learn new songs and stories, students learn critical thinking and literacy skills, readers pick up the latest best sellers, and children are supported in the love of reading.”
The Fall Program Guide, available at all provincial libraries, contains a full list of events. The guide can also be downloaded at www.library.pe.ca. For more information about programs and services, or to locate a library branch near you, call 902-961-7320.
