Farmers Helping Farmers would like to congratulate Carolyn Francis on receiving the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award. The Award was presented to her by the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, on Thursday, April 25, 2013, during a ceremony at Rideau Hall.

Ms. Francis is the Vice-President of Farmers Helping Farmers, an Island-based non-government organization which funds projects in Kenya, and has been a long-time volunteer responsible for the organization’s school twinning project.

“On behalf of the Board of Directors and members of Farmers Helping Farmers, I want to say how thrilled we are that the Governor General chose to honour Carolyn in this way,” said Mary Nicholson, President of the organization. “Ms. Francis is committed to connecting her province with people in developing countries and we are so pleased she has been recognized for her work.”

Ms. Francis is an active member of the Farmers Helping Farmers Education Committee and looks after the school twinning project which, in this school year, has 17 Island schools twinned with 17 Kenyan schools. The students at these schools exchange letters twice a year.

"Without Carolyn’s hard work and dedication we would not have had the success we have had,” said Patsy Dingwell, Chair of the Farmers Helping Farmers Education Committee.

She has also been instrumental in arranging for students from the UPEI Bachelor of Education program to spend a six-week practicum at some of these twinned schools in Kenya where they have an opportunity to teach students.
