Cardigan Seniors Launch International Year Of Older Persons Pin

* Health and Social Services [to Nov 2005]
Cardigan seniors led Prince Edward Island's launch of the lapel pin to recognize the International Year of Older Persons, 1999.

All seniors over 80 attending the event were presented with the colourful red, purple and gold pin.

Margaret Quinn, Cardigan member of the Provincial Year of Older Persons Planning Committee, said the pin will raise awareness of the year and encourage Islanders to participate.

"As 1999 is quickly approaching," she said, "the timing of the pin launch is appropriate. By wearing the pin, people will remind others of this year and what they can do in 1999 to recognize seniors in their families and communities."

The pin design includes sweeping circular lines symbolizing the continuing development and diversity of older persons, the continuity of life stages and the progression towards a society for all ages.

"With 1999 less than a month away, Islanders of all ages and from all walks of life are being asked to plan events and activities to recognize and celebrate the achievements and contributions of seniors," said Ms. Quinn.

To encourage recognition of the year, community leaders and municipalities are asked to mention the International Year of Older Persons during the delivery of new year messages. Neighbourhoods and businesses are also asked to display messages on their bulletin boards.

The Provincial Planning Committee is making the pin available to groups who would like to raise funds to sponsor International Year of Older Person activities and events. Proceeds from the sale of pins will also support a scholarship to promote study in gerontology.

Pins are available from members of the provincial planning committee including: Anna Duffy (Chair), Helen McCabe, Heather Henry-MacDonald, Claude Bell, George Steiger, Margaret Quinn, Gary Naylor, Jodi Swan, Orella Arsenault, Doreen Sark, Bernadette McDermid-Pederson, and Len O'Connor.
