A drawing done by a student in the Montague family of schools has been chosen for the annual Natural Resources Canada classroom poster in 2009.

Alyta VandenBroek, a grade three student at Cardigan Consolidated School received confirmation of her success during a recent presentation at the school by George Webster, Prince Edward Island Minister of Environment, Energy and Forestry. Each year, the federal department of Natural Resources Canada holds an art contest for children aged 6-13. The theme for this year was Save Energy! Save Nature!

Natural Resources Canada publishes Energy and Environment artwork from the contest, selecting one drawing from each province and territory in Canada. This fall, a classroom poster will be created to celebrate the winners.

Minister Webster said the contest is a good way to get young people thinking about the environment and about energy conservation.

“Children who participate in the contest today could grow into the Island’s environmental leaders in years to come. But even now they can influence their families, schools and communities to be conscious about wise energy use and environmental responsibility,” he said.

Recent PEI selections include: Jessie Woods from Rollo Bay Consolidated School (2008); Rio Hong from West Kent Elementary School (2007); Lindsay Clow from Grand Tracadie Elementary School (2006); Katie Mooney from Rollo Bay Consolidated School (2005); Julie Collier from Grand Tracadie Elementary School (2004); and Sarah McLeod from Belfast Consolidated School (2003).
