Canadian Agricultural Safety Week declared by Minister

Canadian Agricultural Safety Week is an ideal opportunity to review, develop and promote safety systems on farms, says Agriculture and Forestry Minister George Webster.

“In declaring the week of March 11 to 17 as Canadian Agricultural Safety Week in Prince Edward Island, I encourage farm operations to assess, improve and if necessary further develop safe farming practices,” said Minister Webster. “Even though this is a traditionally slow time of year, this week is a timely reminder of the need to ensure the safety of everyone involved on the farm.”

Across Canada, the National Farm Safety Week campaign is delivered by the Canadian Federation of Agriculture and the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association (CASA) in partnership with Farm Credit Canada and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. In Prince Edward Island, producers can learn more about farm safety through programs offered by the Prince Edward Island Federation of Agriculture. The farm safety program is provided with financial support from the Department of Agriculture and Forestry.

“Risk management is an important part of any agricultural operation,” said John Jamieson, Executive Director of the Federation of Agriculture, and a member organization of the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association. “We are pleased to work with the Prince Edward Island Department of Agriculture and Forestry and CASA to deliver safety programs that help Island farmers and their employees stay safe and productive.”

“Farms are not only a workplace but also the area where families live,” said Mr. Webster. “By taking steps to ensure safety, farms will be better places in which to live and work.”
