The provincial Cabinet hosted its meeting in Scotchfort today and participated in informative discussions with First Nation leaders from across the province, says Premier Robert Ghiz.
“Today’s Cabinet tour was a great chance to meet with First Nation leaders and the residents of Scotchfort, and to experience the rich culture of our First Nation communities,” said Premier Ghiz, who is also Minister Responsible for Aboriginal Affairs. “It was an excellent opportunity to discuss the progress of our partnership agreement with the Mi'kmaq which covers justice, education, health, child and family services, and economic development and employment services.”
The meeting with PEI’s First Nations Leadership Group involved Abegweit First Nation, Lennox Island First Nation and the Mi’kmaq Confederacy of Prince Edward Island.
“Today’s meeting gave us an opportunity to discuss many important projects which we know will improve the lives of our First Nations citizens living on and off reserve,” said Chief Brian Francis. “In partnership with the Provincial Government, we have a desire to create jobs and opportunities within our communities and that will have a positive impact on the economy of Prince Edward Island.”
MLA Buck Watts welcomed the Premier and members of Cabinet to Scotchfort.
“I want to thank our Premier and Ministers for visiting with residents and touring the community of Scotchfort today,” said Mr. Watts. “The entire First Nations community plays an important role in the cultural, social and economic fabric of our province. These meetings allow everyone to share ideas and discuss ways to work together.”
The tour of Scotchfort included an official welcome from Chief Brian Francis, Opening Prayer and traditional Mi’kmaq Smudging Ceremony by Elder Thirly Levi as well as cultural performances by dancers and drummers.
