Brookvale Provincial Ski Park will introduce a mandatory helmet policy for all users of the downhill facility for the 2016 ski season, says Minister of Economic Development and Tourism Heath MacDonald.
“We want to ensure that all users of Brookvale’s downhill facility enjoy their experience and at the same time have some level of protection against head injury,” said Minister MacDonald. “We strongly encourage all users of the facility to wear helmets now. They are already mandatory for all school groups, ski patrollers, terrain park users, ski school instructors and ski school participants under 18, but next season all users of the downhill facility will be required to wear helmets.”
Brookvale will also invest in additional rental helmets ahead of the upcoming season.
Very few ski areas in North America have mandatory helmet policies. But recent legislation passed in Nova Scotia, and new mandatory policies at another hill in the region helped encourage the province to institute a new policy at Brookvale.
“The vast majority of skiers and snowboarders wear helmets now, so under the new policy very little will change for most users of the facility,” said Minister MacDonald. “It’s also important to note that helmets do not guarantee someone’s safety in a crash, but they do provide additional protection and help reduce the likelihood of serious brain injury.”
