Born to Read and Share Online Launched at Montague Consolidated

* Education [to Apr 2008]
The Honourable Jeffrey E. Lantz, Minister of Education, joined Grade 2 students and parents at Montague Consolidated School today in the Island launch of the sixth edition in Ben Wicks' Born to Read series. Born to Read and Share Online will be distributed to Island school children in Grades 1-3.

"Ben Wicks' Born to Read series has helped make reading fun for students," said Minister Lantz. "Canada lost a champion of children's literacy when Mr. Wicks died in September. Born to Read encourages parents and caregivers to read and learn with their children. I am proud to participate in the PEI launch of Born to Read and Share Online."

Born to Read and Share Online promotes parents, children and caregivers sharing ideas and reaching out to others through computer literacy and the Internet.

While at Montague Consolidated School today, Minister Lantz and Deputy Minister of Education Shauna Sullivan Curley, saw first-hand how reading and sharing online works. Students and their parents launched the program in the school's computer lab.

"Children are learning to use the Internet as a communication tool,"said Montague Consolidated vice-principal Tim Murphy, who is also the teacher-librarian at the school. "Born to Read promotes learning as a shared experience between children, their parents and caregivers. This fosters a love of learning and reading at an early age."

As with the previous five Born to Read books, Sears Canada is presenting the Born to Read and Share Online book.
