Masseau & Sons Refrigeration Inc. is establishing a 20,000 square foot manufacturing, research and development facility in the Borden-Carleton Industrial Mall.

Masseau & Sons Refrigeration Inc. will be the mall's first tenant according to an official announcement made today in Borden-Carleton. The announcement was made by Wayne Easter, MP for Malpeque on behalf of the Honourable Fred J. Mifflin, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Secretary of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), and the Honourable Pierre S. Pettigrew, Minister of Human Resources Development Canada; the Honourable Pat Binns, Premier of Prince Edward Island, and Rosaire Masseau, President of Masseau & Sons Refrigeration Inc.

The firm manufactures self-contained warehouse refrigeration units, as well as truck and other mobile refrigeration units. The company is also involved in research and development as well as technology transfers to businesses in foreign countries.

"It is very encouraging to see companies of this calibre moving into the Borden-Carleton Light Industrial Mall," said Mr. Easter. "This is an excellent location for manufacturing operations, with easy access to New Brunswick and the eastern seaboard."

The establishment of Masseau & Sons in the 50,000 square-foot industrial mall is estimated to create up to 60 jobs in its first few years of operation.

"We have been working very hard to help the community of Borden-Carleton redevelop after the closure of the Borden-Cape Tormentine ferry service," said Premier Binns. "The establishment of this new business will provide much needed year-round employment for a number of people in the community and create new economic spin-offs to support the local economy."

Masseau & Sons will relocate its operation from Laprairie, Quebec to Borden-Carleton. Mr. Masseau said they selected Prince Edward Island because it offers the right combination of factors such as proximity to new and existing markets, and the availability of suitable training programs such as those at Holland College.

"We plan to maintain a sales and service office in Quebec," said Mr. Masseau. "Here in Borden-Carleton we will have more space to expand and have easier access to a number of new markets we have been cultivating along the eastern seaboard and overseas. I look forward to doing business in Prince Edward Island."

The Borden-Carleton Industrial Mall was built to have the facilities and flexibility to meet the needs of companies such as Masseau & Sons. Both federal and provincial governments are assisting Masseau & Sons Refrigeration Inc. in this $867,500 establishment of operations in Borden-Carleton. The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency has provided a $216,500 loan through its Business Development Program; Enterprise PEI has provided a $200,000 working capital loan; and Human Resources Development Canada provided $150,000 through its Transitional Jobs Fund and $150,000 from the Canada/PEI Labour Market Development Agreement.
