Children across Prince Edward Island will benefit from books donated to public libraries during Family Violence Prevention Week (FVPW) by encouraging them to develop positive relationships, says Minister of Tourism and Culture Robert Henderson.
“During Family Violence Prevention Week we received a donation from the Premier’s Action Committee on Family Violence Prevention to ensure every Public Library on the Island receives a children’s book,” said Minister Henderson. “Those books fit the theme of ‘Families Care’ which has been the focus of our programming during FVPW. As part of that theme, we stress the importance of reading together as a family to improve literacy in children and the importance of peaceful conflict resolution.”
The books feature characters that face challenges but find a way to overcome them and collaborate. Young children’s feelings are articulated and resolved in a caring, peaceful manner. The books encourage discussions about feelings in a family or group setting, the importance of getting along and illustrate the fact that there is always a way to find common ground, with a focus on positive relationships.
“Reading books with children that have meaningful themes like those donated by the Premier’s Action Committee on Family Violence Prevention helps to encourage healthy relationships,” said Minister of Community Services and Seniors, Valerie E. Docherty. “We know that children learn from adult behavior. It is important for each of us to recognize that we all have a responsibility to act as positive role models for our children, our friends’ children and our neighbours’ children because they are our next generation of parents, teachers and leaders.”
Each Public Library received at least one book. The titles donated by the Premier’s Action Committee include:
