February 12, 1997 * Economic Development [to Jul 1998]Representatives from the Boeing Company, the world's largest aircraft manufacturer, are on Prince Edward Island today to examine the expertise of the growing aerospace sector here. In 1996, Boeing secured orders for over 1,000 new commercial aircraft and are taking this opportunity to get to know PEI's capabilities to assist them in meeting their expanding production requirements. AlliedSignal, Wiebel Aerospace, Testori Americas and Tube Fab met this morning with senior representatives from Boeing. The purpose of the meeting was for the Island companies to understand how to become qualified to supply Boeing with products. This afternoon, Boeing officials will be touring the Slemon Park facilities to get a first hand look at the companies and their abilities to compete on a world level. The Boeing visit follows meetings held recently in Ottawa with Premier Pat Binns and on a separate occasion with Wes MacAleer, Minister of Economic Development and Tourism. "The aerospace sector has great promise for the job and wealth creation for our Province. The fact that Boeing has come to Prince Edward Island is indicative of the potential for future growth," said Minister MacAleer. "We welcome this opportunity to share our companies' abilities in the hope of future supply contracts with Boeing." Media Contact: Ann Stanley
