Binns Announces Scholarship

Premier's Office
Premier Pat Binns today announced that the Government of Prince Edward Island will establish a scholarship in recognition of the

services provided by the employees of Marine Atlantic.

The announcement came following the meeting of the Provincial Cabinet on board the ferry Abegweit. The Cabinet meeting was the first time a formal Cabinet session has been held on board one of the Marine Atlantic ferries. It was held in recognition of the contribution the service has made to the development of the Island and the important role it has played in the lives of Islanders.

Premier Binns says the scholarship will serve as an ongoing reminder of the Marine Atlantic service and the many employees who, over the years, have been associated with providing that daily service to Islanders. "We wanted to do something that would be a tangible, ongoing recognition of the service, and a scholarship provided each year to a deserving young Islander is one way to do that. The employees have provided excellent public service and are involved in many Island communities. This scholarship will be an ongoing reminder of the people who have been a part of this ferry service."

The scholarship will be awarded on a yearly basis to the son or daughter of a Marine Atlantic employee. It will be available to both UPEI and Holland College students. The scholarship would cover the full yearly tuition costs of a student enrolled in a regular program at UPEI or Holland College.
