* Education [to Apr 2008]
Approximately 8,443 Island students in kindergarten through Grade 3 will hurry home in the next few weeks with copies of Ben Wicks' "Born to Read and Surf" book. "Born to Read and Surf" encourages parents and their children to explore the world of the Internet together — safely and responsibly.

"Born to Read and Surf" was launched in PEI today in the new computer lab at Amherst Cove School. Students representing grades 1-3 demonstrated their Internet and computer skills to a group of parents, teachers, Minister of Education Chester Gillan, and Western School Board Superintendent Sonia Osborne.

"'Born to Read and Surf' provides parents with tips on how they can assist their children in becoming familiar with one aspect of technology - using the Internet," said Minister Gillan. "Developing effective computer literacy skills has become an important component of a child's educational success."

Ben Wicks' "Born To Read" series, the largest literacy initiative of its kind in Canadian history, promotes the importance of literacy and the important role parents and caregivers play to ensure that children are given opportunities to develop and strengthen their reading skills.

Over two million children in Canada will receive copies of Ben Wicks' "Born to Read and Surf" book.
