This week 8,437 Island students in kindergarten through to Grade 3, will be hurrying home with a book called Born to Read and Cook, written by famous cartoonist and author, Ben Wicks. Born to Read and Cook is the fourth edition in a series distributed to children in schools across Canada.
"This book does an excellent job to promote family literacy," said Minister Gillan. "Parents are very important teachers and the Born to Read and Cook book allows them to teach their children valuable literacy skills and nutrition habits."
Education Minister Chester Gillan, Lorraine Stewart, President of the West Kent Home and School Association, Alex Stewart, a Grade 3 student and his classmates, launched the book today at West Kent Elementary, by making a recipe in the book.
"Born to Read and Cook encourages children and their parents to read together at home," said Lorraine Stewart. "This is a fun way for children to develop their literacy skills and learn to cook at the same time."
Over 1.9 million children in Canada will receive a copy of the Ben Wicks Born to Read and Cook book.
