Honourable Keith Milligan, Minister of Transportation and Public Works, today announced a heightened awareness campaign for two department programs.
"In an effort to promote the use of our toll-free, 1-800-658-1807, telephone vehicle registration system and to educate the public on the necessity of organ donors, my Department, in cooperation with Island Tel, will conduct a mail-out to all residences in Prince Edward Island," said Mr. Milligan.
The Highway Safety Division launched a toll-free voice activated telephone vehicle registration system in March whereby vehicle owners can renew passenger vehicle and light truck registration utilizing a touch-tone phone. In early April, the Minister announced a change in the Organ Donor intent process for clients applying for or renewing a driver's license. Clients are now asked to answer an organ donor question as part of the driver's license application.
Department records indicate a growing increase in the use of both these programs by the public. Since March, over 2,000 vehicles have been registered using the telephone registration option and another 2,000 Islanders were identified as organ donors when completing their license application.
"I am confident the campaign currently underway will assist us to further educate the public on these programs. The telephone vehicle registration system takes less than five minutes to complete and provides a new level of quality customer service and increases the speed and efficiency with which renewals are processed," said Mr. Milligan. "By including the organ donor question as part of the license application, we hope a greater number of Islanders will become educated on the need for organs and will agree to sign up as potential donors."
