Award Presented for Excellence in Library Service

* Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour [to Jan 2010]
Hon. Carolyn Bertram, Minister of Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour recently presented Mary Lou Hansen, manager of the Children’s Loft at Confederation Centre Public Library, with the 2008 Nora Bateson Award for Excellence in Library Service.

This is the first year for the presentation of this award, which was created in recognition of the 75th anniversary of the Public Library Service on Prince Edward Island and in honour of the province’s first librarian Nora Bateson, who, beginning in 1933, travelled throughout the province promoting the concept of community libraries. By the end of the year, Ms. Bateson’s efforts began to pay off and five branches were open. By 1936, 22 branches were operating across the island.

“Mary Lou exemplifies the initiative and commitment to excellence that Nora Bateson stood for,” said Carolyn Bertram, Minister Responsible for libraries. “Thanks to Mary Lou, the Children’s Loft is a vibrant, active destination for infants, toddlers and children. She has also been involved in the creation of an area within the library for teens, and she always demonstrates enthusiasm and dedication to public library service.”

The Nora Bateson Award for Excellence in Library Service will be presented annually.
