COWS has received top honours for one of its cheeses, another sign that Prince Edward Island is becoming increasingly known for its culinary experiences and offerings, says Tourism and Culture Minister Robert Vessey.

“More and more Island food products are being recognized on the world stage,” said the Minister. “Whether it’s our fresh seafood or local produce, visitors are attracted to our Island by our exciting culinary flavours.”

The company’s Avonlea Clothbound Cheddar was recognized as the No. 1 Aged Cheddar (1-3 years) by the Canadian Cheese Grand Prix. COWS received the award during a gala in Toronto last week.

The grand prix is open to Canadian manufacturers of any cheeses made exclusively from Canadian cow’s milk. There are more than 180 Canadian cheese manufacturers producing more than 350 different types of cheeses.

The cheeses are judged by expert tasters representing every region of Canada, including experts in nutritional sciences, gastronomy, hotel administration and the restaurant industry.

“Prince Edward Island is home to many culinary delights and produces many premium food items,” said the Minister. “COWS is to be congratulated for this latest well-deserved award.”

Avonlea Clothbound Cheddar is aged for at least one year and is made from the milk of Prince Edward Island cows, by the makers of COWS ice cream. COWS received the top prize at the 2009 Canadian Cheese Grand Prix in the old/extra old cheddar category.
