August 15 is National Acadian Day

Premier's Office
August 15 marks National Acadian Day, celebrating the enduring vitality and cultural heritage of the Acadian people throughout the country, said Premier Robert Ghiz, Minister Responsible for Acadian and Francophone Affairs.

“Prince Edward Island’s Acadian and Francophone community is vibrant and thriving,” said Premier Ghiz. “National Acadian Day is an opportunity for all Islanders to recognize the contribution of this community to the economic, cultural and social fabric of our province.”

The date itself was chosen in 1881, during the first national Acadian convention, held in Memramcook, New Brunswick. It was officially recognized by the Parliament of Canada in 2003.

A complete list of activities being held to mark the day can be accessed on the Société Saint-Thomas-d’Aquin’s website at www.ssta.org.
