Shaun MacIsaac, President of the Atlantic Standardbred Breeders Association, announced today that the Atlantic Superstores are assisting with a key component of the Atlantic Breeders Crown weekend - the Legends of Harness Racing. The sponsorship was arranged with the assistance and support of Shaun MacGillvary, Charlottetown Superstore Manager.
An industry-wide committee planning the Atlantic Breeders Crown weekend recognized early on that the participation of a distinguished group of harness racing legends would significantly enhance the Atlantic Breeders Crown weekend from a fan's point of view. Ten top Canadian and Maritime harness drivers have been invited and will be in Charlottetown adding their signature to what is being billed as "The Greatest Show in Maritime Racing."
The impressive list of drivers who will be in attendance for the Atlantic Breeders Crown events include Jim Whelan and Mike MacDonald, both former Islanders; Dave Pinkney and Phil Pinkney from Nova Scotia; Steve Mahar from New Brunswick; and Ron Waples, Bill Wellwood and Bill Gale from Ontario. Also joining the group is Pat Crowe, the driver of Cam Fella, the winningest pacer in harness racing history. Waples and Crowe will be conducting one-hour fan seminars at the Charlottetown Driving Park at 12 noon on Breeders Crown race day.
The Atlantic Standardbred Breeders Association manages the ongoing Atlantic Sires Stakes program and the season ending Championship Finals - the Atlantic Breeders Crown races. Over $100,000 in purses will be up for grabs on Sunday afternoon, October 7 in the six Breeders Crown races. An added Breeders Crown attraction this year is the phenomenal 25 race unbeaten streak of the three year old pacing sensation - Firm's Phantom.
Race cards will also be held at the Charlottetown Diving Park on Thursday evening, October 4 and Saturday afternoon, October 6. Other activities rounding out the Atlantic Breeders Crown weekend include industry receptions, the Breeders Crown Dinner, a harness racing memorabilia display, a golf tournament at Fox Meadow, a pancake breakfast, fan seminars and a special Breeders Crown fundraiser.
